The Ultimate Architecture student debate:
Manual Drawing v/s. Software Drawing
The architecture college life starts with drafting all the plans, sections, elevations manually by hand. The hand drafted sheets are torn and thrown by faculty in the starting years at the school of architecture. No wonder the faculty expect students' hand draftings to be as perfect as a computer print!!! A perfect irony!!!
The students are told to do draftings which they go on doing for many sleepless nights having no clue about an earthquake which had just struck the place! After doing so much draftings they definitely expect to get at least a compliment from the faculty. Yes, if they are fortunate they may get one with a thousand suggestions or their drawings end up at the ultimate hell; the Dustbin.
The faculties give the reason for doing hand drafting to be beneficial and increasing one's concentration on the smallest details in design. Well they may be right at this point because this is the most common statement spoken by faculties at different colleges and they are definitely much more experienced.
Part Two : The software drawing
The second method of representation. Here you need to know all the tools and commands of software and you are done. Biggest advantage according to me : Correct anything at any time without doing a complete redo!!! The software such as AutoCad is used extensively nowadays to prepare drawings and other visuals of the designs. The softwares avail the tools which even allow you to experiment the materials on the building. 3D Max, AutoCad, Sketchup are the softwares which allow easy handling of tools to draw. It does take time in this drawings also but everything is manageable.
There is also this practice of making software drawings first and then hand draftings in architectural colleges. There is this fusion of two extreme different methods of drawings. Well we are not the ones to decide and enforce any method on anyone. We may find one method suitable for us while it may not be the case for someone other. The colleges do ultimately try to teach us the best; they have experiments done on the styles of teaching for many years!!
