STAIRS

Sydney Opera House

Today's edition will discuss about the stairs: the function, use, attributes and also about their photography.

Listening to the word 'Stairs' what do you see in your mind; a series of immediate levels ascending or descending from where you are standing. They lead us somewhere or bring us back. Stairs are one of the most important elements in any building. If one understands the principle  of stairs and grasps it; he has achieved the most important tools of designing.

Staircases have various functions: connecting levels, defining spaces, as threshold connection, defining different spaces i.e. like a common and a holy place. Stairs are used as walking i.e. to ascend or descend, as sitting, as aesthetics, as modulator of facade, etc.
Let's see some of the photographs explaining us clearly about the attributes of stairs:

Theatre Aspendos, Turkey

Piazza di Spagna, Rome

Theatre Aspendos of Turkey has used stairs as sitting spaces for the open air theatre; the concept which is being even used today. What I think is stairs is the most simple and innovative solution for sitting in a place like theatre.

Piazza di Spagna in Rome is a place where people sit and chat with each other. It is also being used in its fundamental way; to travel up or down. The place is a nice sitting space with a nice view where one can talk and enjoy.

Ziggurat , Iraq

The Ziggurat in Iraq built in ancient times defines the use of stairs as defining two different spaces and creating psychological boundaries as normal land and a holy place.

Here are some tips for a good stairs photography:
. Try to capture the staircases in maximum sunlight possible i.e. during daytime.
. Take an angle where the shadow of stairs forms an interesting composition completing the stairs' definition and explanations.
. Include a human inside your picture to get an idea about the scale  and proportion of surroundings.
. Monochrome coloured photos are a good choice in case of stairs as one above.

Well this are only some of the tips. Try exploring more with live experience with this element; because the more you'll explore yourself; the more creative you'll get and the more good photos you'll get.
